Statement on Seismic Testing Announcement
CHARLESTON, SC – In response to today’s announcement from the Obama Administration denying permission to conduct seismic testing for oil and gas offshore, Katie Zimmerman, Coastal Conservation League’s Air, Water, and Public Health Director, issued the following statement:
“We applaud the Obama Administration’s decision to protect the Atlantic from risky seismic testing that would have decimated the lives of our beloved marine mammals and the well-being of our rich fisheries.
Seismic testing is a means to one end, offshore oil and gas development, which is widely opposed by communities, businesses, and local governments up and down the South Carolina coast.
We thank the many Lowcountry leaders who have stood up against seismic testing and drilling for oil and gas in protection of our beaches, rivers, and marshes.”
The Coastal Conservation League is a non-profit advocacy organization dedicated to protecting the coastal resources of South Carolina. Our mission is to protect the natural landscapes, abundant wildlife, clean water and traditional communities by working with citizens, local governments and the state legislature.
