In response to the announcement of bids from the Department of Administration on the disposition of Santee Cooper, Eddy Moore, Energy and Climate Director at the Coastal Conservation League, issued the following statement:

“The bids are a good start. South Carolina deserves a clean energy future and the jobs that come with it. More solar means more savings and more jobs for South Carolinians.

When considering these bids, the General Assembly should keep us on a path to 100% clean energy and not a path back to the twentieth century. Building expensive gas infrastructure risks another VC Summer style boondoggle, with ratepayers on the hook for billions invested.

Continuing to burn coal for electricity means higher power bills and smog and soot in our air and mercury in our water.

Santee Cooper customers and all South Carolinians deserve the least-cost plan.”

For more information on clean energy as the least-cost option for Santee Cooper customers, please see the September 2019 report from Synapse Energy Economics, available at https://www.southernenvironment.org/uploads/words_docs/2019_09_10_Final_Santee_Cooper_Report.pdf.
