Supreme Court Preserves Rights to Challenge Government Approval of Polluters on Behalf of Affected Citizens
CHARLESTON, SC – Today, the South Carolina Supreme Court reversed a lower court’s decision that denied citizens’ ability to challenge the permit authorizing the construction of new cruise ship terminal at Union Pier.
In response to the decision, Laura Cantral, Executive Director of the Coastal Conservation League, issued the following statement:
“With this decision, the South Carolina Supreme Court has given a voice back to South Carolina citizens. Neighbors of the proposed cruise terminal now have a chance to be heard in court. The court’s decision is an important one, not only for the parties involved in this case, but for all residents and community groups. It establishes that they have the right to challenge permitting for industry projects that could negatively affect their quality of life and the health of the environment.”
