Now is the time to show up for Lewis Ocean Bay!

by Emmi Palenbaum
The 3rd and final reading to rezone the Conway Medical Center (CMC) property across from Lewis Ocean Bay Heritage Preserve is  on the agenda  for Tuesday’s Horry County Council meeting.

We need your help! Please attend the meeting to show the council that smoke and hospitals do not mix and the best outcome for this parcel is for CMC to sell it to SC Department of Natural Resource so that it can be conserved.

Horry County Council Meeting

Tuesday, February 20th at 6:00 PM

Horry County Government Center

1301 2nd Ave, Conway, SC

Now is the time to pack the house! We will have signs and stickers available to show Horry County Council how many people are opposed to the rezoning and development agreement. Look out for Venus flytrap and prescribed fire signs!

What else can you do?

Please also write county council urging them to deny the rezoning and request a public hearing at the very least, as it has not been heard for over 2.5 years and we have had 3 new members join the council since the last reading. They need the opportunity to hear from their constituents in order to make an informed decision.

What’s the concern?

Conway Medical Center is proposing to build a hospital across International Drive from Lewis Ocean Bay Heritage Preserve. Hospitals are smoke-sensitive areas and regulations limit sending smoke from a prescribed burn in the direction of a hospital, rightfully so. If this hospital moves forward, the SC Department of Natural Resources and SC Forestry Commission will be constrained in when they can conduct prescribed burns at Lewis Ocean Bay, which is already a challenge due to the surrounding roads, homes, and site conditions. If resource managers are unable to perform this necessary ecosystem management practice, this not only puts Lewis Ocean Bay at risk, but also increases the risk of wildfire for the surrounding area.

Thank you for speaking up for our natural resources and the safety of our communities! There are many other suitable locations for a hospital, but there is only one Lewis Ocean Bay.

Please don’t hesitate to reach out to Becky Ryon if you have any questions! We’ll see you there.
